Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first under-river tunnel of Kolkata Metro on March 6, marking a historic milestone in India's metro transportation. This landmark project, which entails the Howrah-Esplanade line, represents India's first metro transport endeavor featuring a tunnel constructed within a river. The tunnel spans a length of 520 meters with each tunnel boasting an internal diameter of 5.55 meters, situated 33 meters below the river bed.

The inauguration of this tunnel will revolutionize commuting experiences, with metro trains traversing the Hooghly River from Howrah Metro Station in less than a minute, offering passengers a unique and memorable journey. Additionally, upon commencement of operations, the metro will cover the distance from Sector V to Howrah in just 27 minutes, making Howrah the deepest metro station in the country.
